Saturday, November 8 will be the “Coolest Day in Des Moines in 2014!” as Special Olympics Iowa and the Iowa Wild team up to support the athletes and programs of Special Olympics Iowa with the Des Moines Polar Plunge at Big Creek Beach in Polk City and Special Olympics Iowa Night at the Iowa Wild game at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines.  

For just $12 you can purchase a ticket for the Special Olympics Iowa Night at the Iowa Wild game on November 8 and join Special Olympics Iowa and the Iowa Wild in celebrating the “Coolest Day in Des Moines in 2014!” to support the athletes and programs of Special Olympics Iowa.   Participants of the plunge who raise a minimum of $75 by November 1 will receive a free ticket to the game.  Participants who raise a minimum of $125 will receive TWO free tickets to the game!  Can't go to the game?  Buy a ticket for an athlete!

Attendees at the game will have the opportunity to bid on unique Hand Turkey drawings from Iowa Wild players and Special Olympics Iowa athletes, participate in the Chuck A Puck contest during the second intermission, and take a turn trying to dunk a police officer in the dunk tank to raise awareness of and funds for the athletes of Special Olympics Iowa.  All while enjoying the fast paced action of Iowa Wild hockey!

Plunge Details

Check In/On Site Registration:

          Saturday, November 8


          9:45am - 10:45pm

Donut Eating Contest:  10:00am
A representative from each team will have the opportunity to participate in a donut eating contest before the plunge!

Plunge:  11:00am

Post party following the Plunge, including food and prizes!

Plunge Contests:

  • Most money raised by an individual
  • Most money raised online
  • Best Individual Costume
  • Best Team Costume
  • Most money raised by a Chicken

Incentive Prizes:

Incentive prizes start at $250.  View incentives!

What to Expect:

This event features a cold start and a warm ending as plungers run into the lake from beach access to raise money for Special Olympics Iowa.  Get your team together (costumes optional, but fun) and create an experience full of memories as you go "freezin' for a reason". 

Professional divers are on hand to assist our plungers and after you freeze, we provide heated changing areas on-site.  Spectators cheer and view the plunge from the beach area.
