
Over 900 Special Olympics Iowa athletes compete in Mid-Winter Tournament
Friday, March 9 - Saturday, March 10, over 900 Special Olympics Iowa athletes competed in the 19th annual Mid-Winter Tournament at the Field House, located on the University of Iowa campus. Athletes of all ages and ability had an opportunity to participate in various sports and activities including: basketball, basketball skills, cheerleading, gymnastics and powerlifting. More than 350 coaches and chaperones as well as 500 volunteers donated their time to make this event a success.
Friday evening, a banquet was held at the University Recreation Center with a Pirates of the Caribbean theme, followed by a dance for all participants. In addition to competition, the Healthy Athletes program was offered in Healthy Hearing and Health Promotions. Healthy Athletes is a screening program available during the Summer Games and Mid-Winter Tournament to improve greater overall health and fitness for the athletes.
The 2008 Mid-Winter Tournament is scheduled for March 14-15.
