Team Iowa represented Special Olympics Iowa in the 2006 National Games

Team Iowa was a group of 250 Special Olympics Iowa coaches and athletes who represented Iowa in the first ever Special Olympics USA National Summer Games held at Iowa State University in Ames from July 2-7, 2006. Team Iowa were drawn to represent our state in the first ever National Games. Currently, Special Olympics Iowa has the 2nd highest athlete participation rate per capita in the United States, serving over 13,000 athletes from all 99 counties in Iowa.
The National Games brought more than 3,000 Special Olympics athletes from across the United States, as well as more than 2,000 coaches and official delegates, 10,000 family members and friends, 8,000 volunteers and 30,000 spectators. Special Olympics Iowa sent the largest contingent of athletes and coaches, 250, to compete in the games and proudly represent our home state of Iowa.
The 2006 National Games highlighted thrilling athletic competition, had exciting live entertainment, and provided experiences that generated lifetime memories. Athletes had the opportunity to participate in various sports including: aquatics, athletics (track & field), basketball, bocce, bowling, golf, gymnastics, powerlifting, soccer, softball, swimming, tennis and volleyball.
