State Summer Games
During May, the State Summer Games are held at Iowa State University in Ames. Nearly 3,000 athletes participate in Special Olympics Iowa's largest annual event. Competition includes aquatics, athletics (track & field), bocce, cycling, developmental events, roller skating, soccer and tennis. Athletes also enjoy Opening Ceremonies at Hilton Coliseum, a Celebration Dance, and activities and entertainment at the Olympic Village.

Athletics
Athletes may enter two individual events and a relay, except in the case of the Pentathlon. A pentathlon athlete may do only the Pentathlon and a relay.

MINI-JAVELIN EVENT INFORMATION:
Special Olympics Iowa will offer a new track and field event as part of the Spring Games and Summer Games in 2012. Athletes can participate in a mini-javelin throwing event. The mini-javelin is a developmental event. Therefore athletes can choose the mini-javelin or softball throw (not both). Like the softball throw, the mini-javelin is a lead-up event to the shotput.
Turbo javs will be used during the mini-javelin event. All female athletes and male athletes age 8 – 15 will throw a 300 gram turbo jav. Male athletes over 16 will throw a 400 gram turbo jav.
The company TurboJav has a promotion going on through June 1, 2011. You can order a 6 pack kit for $145 (a reduction from the standard charge of $200) plus shipping cost or a box of 50 for $800 plus shipping. You may order any combination of 300 gram and 400 gram turbojavs in each kit. Payment must be made by check or by wire transfer. Please provide PO plus a billing address and contact person.
