State Winter Games
This three-day event is held every January in Dubuque. More than 400 athletes compete in Alpine and Nordic skiing, snowshoeing, figure skating and speed skating. Multiple venues are used to accommodate all the activities including: Sundown Mountain Ski Area, the Grand River Center, Albrecht Acres and the Mystique Community Ice Center.
A highlight of the Winter Games is the opening ceremonies on Monday evening at the Grand Harbor Hotel. It includes a parade along the River Walk to the River Center Patio, and athletes lighting the flame to officially kick-off the Games. In addition to the sporting events, there is a banquet at the Grand River Center, a dance and a pool party.
