Challenge Days: Believe and Achieve

More than 600 athletes with severe and profound intellectual disabilities participate in Special Olympics Challenge Days each year. Challenge Day programs are a one-day event designed to provide meaningful competition for adults and children with severe and profound intellectual disabilities. They consist of various activities in which participants may take part as a team or individually in sports such as: wheelchair basketball, volleyball, ball darts, dice bowling, ramp bowling and many other activities, all with the aid of switch-activated equipment.

Since the athletes live in care facilities and therefore have limited mobility, Special Olympics Iowa brings the competition to them. Currently, Challenge Days are held eight times a year in the following communities: Cedar Falls (two), Coralville, Council Bluffs/Glenwood, Davenport, Des Moines, Dubuque, and Lake City/Carroll.

See the SOIA Calendar for dates of upcoming Challenge Days.

To sign up for a Challenge Day or for additional information, please contact Kathy Irving at (515-986-5520, ext. 111).

Thanks to our Des Moines event sponsors Polk County and Prairie Meadows.
