During May, the State Summer Games are held at Iowa State University in Ames. More than 3,000 athletes participate in Special Olympics Iowa's largest annual event. Competition includes aquatics, athletics (track & field), bocce, cycling, developmental events, roller skating, soccer and tennis. Athletes also enjoy Opening Ceremonies at Hilton Coliseum, a Celebration Dance, and activities and entertainment at the Olympic Village.

Carroll Challenge Day
More than 600 athletes with severe and profound intellectual disabilities participate in Special Olympics Challenge Days each year. Challenge Day programs are a one-day event designed to provide meaningful competition for adults and children with severe and profound intellectual disabilities. They consist of various activities in which participants may take part as a team or individually in sports such as: wheelchair basketball, volleyball, ball darts, dice bowling, ramp bowling and many other activities, all with the aid of switch-activated equipment.

Nearly 60 horse riding athlete enthusiasts participate in seven different events including horsemanship – walk only, Western or English horsemanship, egg and spoon, barrels, key hole race, ball drop, pole bending, and baton relay.
